Marathon Kids

Saturday morning was the opening of Marathon Kids here in Austin. It is a wonderful program and we have been participating since the boy was in the 2nd grade so for 6yrs now. The kids all love going to the opening because they receive a cool MK water bottle, a neat MK sticker, some other goodies and the UT athletes are there at the end to sign your shirt or water bottle it is pretty neat. It is also a great way to get the kids into exercise and keeping your body healthy. At the end of the year there is another ceremony and the kids receive Marathon Kids t-shirts and a medal for completing the year!

There was a bit of extra fun this year......I lost my keys at some point! When we got back to our car with all the goodies, raincoats, umbrella, windbreakers, water bottles etc I realized my keys were missing!!! !@##$@!#@#!@! is all I could think, but I remained very calm(I was so proud of myself!). So I wrapped up all the extras in Cameron's hoodie shoved them way under the car and off we hiked back to the field to find the keys! We went straight to the Lost and Found tent and low and behold they were there!!! THANK GOD! Twenty minutes later we were back in the car on the way home! lol

A little bit about the program:
Throughout the year children in the grades K-5th are expected to run, walk, jog 26.2 miles. They can do these laps at school during Gym class or at home with their parents. They even have a program through the YMCA for children that live in not so great neighborhoods to be able to run there safely. The first mile of the year is run at the Marathon Kids opening ceremony and the final lap is run at the Marathon Kids closing ceremony.

Marathon Kids Final Lap

Today was the final lap of Marathon kids and we had a good time despite the cold rainy weather! It was a pretty uneventful morning until we got started getting ready to leave. It always seems to happen that way. I asked 20mins before we left if anyone was going to take their hoodie and of course they said "No". The minute we step towards the door though everyone has decided it is too cold and starts scrambling to find their coats!

We of course could not be out the door in time to save our lives and we still had to stop at the store to put gas in the car and air in the tire. Not to mention we still had yet to drive across town in the wet rainy weather. The traffic was horrible and on a Saturday morning none the less, it took us twice the time it normally would have to get there.

Once we finally got parked and up in the stands it started to rain! lol Not just a little drizzle either it poured on us for about 10mins before it let up and it did I tell you it was 55degrees outside!! I do realize it is colder in lots of other areas of the country, but here in Texas in the rain that is COLD!!! The kids did really well though we stuck it out and did not scramble like the others in a pack mentality to escape the rain lest we melt!

Normally they have us jog 1 mile around the track by sections, but since today it was raining pretty hard on us they only had us jog 2/3 of a mile. We all jogged the entire way, I was really proud of all the kids and myself it was awesome! The best part is we had so much fun we decided to do our regular mile walk once we got home and T-man went with us!

Last but certainly not least here is the slideshow from today!

The Marathon Kids opening!

Today was the opening of Marathon Kids here in Austin. It is a wonderful program and we have been participating since the boy was in the 3rd grade so for 4yrs now. The kids all love going to the opening because they receive a cool MK water bottle, a neat MK sticker and the UT athletes are there at the end to sign your shirt or water bottle it is pretty neat. It is also a great way to get the kids into exercise and keeping your body healthy. At the end of the year there is another ceremony and the kids receive Marathon Kids t-shirts and a medal for completing the year!

I was so proud of little Spunkmeister she ran the whole mile while I lagged behind her jogging halfway and walking the rest! lol Princess and the boy also ran almost the whole way, I was very proud of all of them. It was so cool we saw one of Princesses BFF's Jasmine while we there and they got to run together! Oh and Lance Armstrong was there with his kids cause they go to AISD and are also in the program. He talked to all the kids about staying healthy etc it was pretty neat. I wish I had gotten a picture of him.

Marathon Kids!

I just wanted to toot my own horn for a sec! lol My kids have a program at school called Marathon kids that we have participated in the last 3yrs and today was kick off day! The kids will run a total of 26 miles throughout the school year. Two of those miles are included in the kick off day and the celebration at the end of the school year with the parents. We had a very successful mile jog/run per kid and I have to say that I am really proud of my kiddos!! Each one was able to run/jog the entire mile even Spunky it was so cool! Each grade runs by themselves the kinder-3rd runs with their parent, 4th & 5th run alone so we all had a good workout today! LOL

Here are a few pictures:
